SCENE TWO

(The bus pulls into the terminal in Alabama, and the passengers get off the bus. On the terminal door, a sign reads “COLORED WAITING ROOM IN REAR.”)

BUS TERMINAL IN MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA

JAMES:: Now, we’ll walk into the white waiting room and order something at the snack bar.

ROBERT: Remember, stay calm and polite, no matter what happens.

(The riders walk into the terminal, past the ticket counter, into an area labeled “WHITE WAITING ROOM.” A number of white people are sitting in rows of seats or eating at the snack bar along the back wall. Two white police officers are standing nearby.)
